{"slug":"2026-W37","at":1789400728,"covers_from":null,"covers_to":"2026-09-14","method":1,"title":"The Trawl Report · 2026-W37","body":"# The Trawl Report · 2026-W37\n\nFirst one. Counted from the snapshot of 2026-09-14; there is no earlier snapshot to compare against, so nothing below moves yet. Method v1.\n\n> The Cap'm counts what he hauled and what he threw back. Read [how we count](/method) before you quote any of it — particularly the tool numbers, which measure how loudly a tool's users say its name and not what anybody uses.\n\n## The trough\n\n214 repos listed across 194 owners.\n- trawled: 202 — found by us, never asked to be here\n- opted in: 12 — committed a slopscore.md\n\n## How much of it is software\n\nOf the 103 candidates the judge has looked at, **86.4% were software somebody made** — an app, a game, a tool, a library, or something with hardware attached. The rest were thrown back.\n\nThis is the number worth having, and the reason the trawl stores what it rejects. Every other leaderboard keeps only what it accepted and so cannot tell you what the pile looks like. What the judge saw, best first:\n\n- **app** — 51 (49.5%)\n- **tool** — 22 (21.4%)\n- **game** — 10 (9.7%)\n- **tool-for-ai-coding** — 8 (7.8%)\n- **list-or-template** — 6 (5.8%)\n- **library** — 4 (3.9%)\n- **hardware** — 2 (1.9%)\n\nBoth of those are a model's labels off a closed list, not a maker's — the only judged numbers in this bulletin, marked as such wherever they appear.\n\n## Which tool gets the credit\n\n33 credits across the trawled sample. A repo can name more than one tool, so the denominator is credits, not repos.\n\n- **claude-code** — 18 (54.5%)\n- **claude** — 11 (33.3%)\n- **codex** — 2 (6.1%)\n- **copilot** — 1 (3%)\n- **cursor** — 1 (3%)\n\n**Read this as: how loudly each tool's users say its name in public.** The trawl searches six grounds named after tools ([method](/method), bias 2), so a tool whose users never tag or describe their repos is undercounted here by construction. It is not market share and it is not usage. On n=33 a week's movement here is noise; it is printed because the count is, not because it means anything yet.\n\n## What it is written in\n\n- **python** — 101 (16%)\n- **shell** — 94 (14.9%)\n- **javascript** — 83 (13.2%)\n- **html** — 72 (11.4%)\n- **css** — 63 (10%)\n- **typescript** — 53 (8.4%)\n- **rust** — 44 (7%)\n- **c** — 29 (4.6%)\n\nDenominator: 630 trawled repos GitHub gave a language for.\n\n## What the net threw back\n\n994 candidates evaluated in the last 30 days and not listed, by reason. This is a rolling 30-day window, so week-over-week movement here is the mix changing, not a week's intake.\n\n- **a licence we cannot quote from** — 399 (40.1%)\n- **never claims a model wrote it** — 383 (38.5%)\n- **owned by an org, so nobody can claim it** — 135 (13.6%)\n- **something else** — 27 (2.7%)\n- **writing about vibe coding, not vibe-coded** — 24 (2.4%)\n- **a tool for people coding with AI** — 12 (1.2%)\n- **a list, guide or template** — 9 (0.9%)\n- **no description to quote** — 5 (0.5%)\n\n## The small print\n\n- Method v1, frozen and versioned: [/method](/method). If a rule changes, the version goes up and the change is dated.\n- This site measures software whose author **says in public** that an AI tool wrote it. It does not measure AI-written software, and no number here can.\n- The numbers this bulletin was written from: [`/report/2026-W37.json`](/report/2026-W37.json). They are frozen with it and will still be there when the snapshot behind them has been pruned.\n- Something wrong? [Say so](/contact). Corrections are published in the next bulletin, never edited in quietly.","data":{"slug":"2026-W37","date":"2026-09-14","since":null,"method":1,"first":true,"totals":{"listed":214,"trawl":202,"opted":12,"owners":194,"added":null,"added_trawl":null,"added_opted":null},"judged":{"seen":103,"was_seen":null,"software":89,"software_share":0.8640776699029126,"codes":[{"key":"app","n":51,"was":null,"added":null,"share":0.49514563106796117,"was_share":null,"points":null},{"key":"tool","n":22,"was":null,"added":null,"share":0.21359223300970873,"was_share":null,"points":null},{"key":"game","n":10,"was":null,"added":null,"share":0.0970873786407767,"was_share":null,"points":null},{"key":"tool-for-ai-coding","n":8,"was":null,"added":null,"share":0.07766990291262135,"was_share":null,"points":null},{"key":"list-or-template","n":6,"was":null,"added":null,"share":0.05825242718446602,"was_share":null,"points":null},{"key":"library","n":4,"was":null,"added":null,"share":0.038834951456310676,"was_share":null,"points":null},{"key":"hardware","n":2,"was":null,"added":null,"share":0.019417475728155338,"was_share":null,"points":null}]},"tools":{"cohort":"trawl","total":33,"was_total":null,"rows":[{"key":"claude-code","n":18,"was":null,"added":null,"share":0.5454545454545454,"was_share":null,"points":null},{"key":"claude","n":11,"was":null,"added":null,"share":0.3333333333333333,"was_share":null,"points":null},{"key":"codex","n":2,"was":null,"added":null,"share":0.06060606060606061,"was_share":null,"points":null},{"key":"copilot","n":1,"was":null,"added":null,"share":0.030303030303030304,"was_share":null,"points":null},{"key":"cursor","n":1,"was":null,"added":null,"share":0.030303030303030304,"was_share":null,"points":null}]},"languages":{"cohort":"trawl","total":630,"was_total":null,"rows":[{"key":"python","n":101,"was":null,"added":null,"share":0.16031746031746033,"was_share":null,"points":null},{"key":"shell","n":94,"was":null,"added":null,"share":0.1492063492063492,"was_share":null,"points":null},{"key":"javascript","n":83,"was":null,"added":null,"share":0.13174603174603175,"was_share":null,"points":null},{"key":"html","n":72,"was":null,"added":null,"share":0.11428571428571428,"was_share":null,"points":null},{"key":"css","n":63,"was":null,"added":null,"share":0.1,"was_share":null,"points":null},{"key":"typescript","n":53,"was":null,"added":null,"share":0.08412698412698413,"was_share":null,"points":null},{"key":"rust","n":44,"was":null,"added":null,"share":0.06984126984126984,"was_share":null,"points":null},{"key":"c","n":29,"was":null,"added":null,"share":0.046031746031746035,"was_share":null,"points":null},{"key":"dockerfile","n":27,"was":null,"added":null,"share":0.04285714285714286,"was_share":null,"points":null},{"key":"makefile","n":26,"was":null,"added":null,"share":0.04126984126984127,"was_share":null,"points":null},{"key":"cpp","n":19,"was":null,"added":null,"share":0.03015873015873016,"was_share":null,"points":null},{"key":"swift","n":19,"was":null,"added":null,"share":0.03015873015873016,"was_share":null,"points":null}]},"net":{"cohort":"trawl","total":994,"was_total":null,"rows":[{"key":"a licence we cannot quote from","n":399,"was":null,"added":null,"share":0.4014084507042254,"was_share":null,"points":null},{"key":"never claims a model wrote it","n":383,"was":null,"added":null,"share":0.3853118712273642,"was_share":null,"points":null},{"key":"owned by an org, so nobody can claim it","n":135,"was":null,"added":null,"share":0.1358148893360161,"was_share":null,"points":null},{"key":"something else","n":27,"was":null,"added":null,"share":0.02716297786720322,"was_share":null,"points":null},{"key":"writing about vibe coding, not vibe-coded","n":24,"was":null,"added":null,"share":0.02414486921529175,"was_share":null,"points":null},{"key":"a tool for people coding with AI","n":12,"was":null,"added":null,"share":0.012072434607645875,"was_share":null,"points":null},{"key":"a list, guide or template","n":9,"was":null,"added":null,"share":0.009054325955734407,"was_share":null,"points":null},{"key":"no description to quote","n":5,"was":null,"added":null,"share":0.005030181086519115,"was_share":null,"points":null}]}}}
